Gas Credit Cards

With prices at the inspirit going up, many people are turning to gas credit cards to save money. The average gas credit card offers a 3%-5% rebate on the come to purchase. Generally, the rebate comes in the form of a check after a period of time. This is not a bad deal, when you consider how a whole year of gas definitely ads up. However, more than 60% of people who have a gas credit card carry a balance and the interest can be steep. Plus, often times the advertised offer isn't exactly what is seems.

When you get an volunteer for a gas credit card, it is important to read the fine print. Often the rebate that is being offered is an introductory deal. What starts as a 6% reduction on gas, may end up as a 2% or 3% rebate after 3-6 month. Also, often certain gas stations are excluded from the credit card rebate program. For case in point, many gas credit cards require that you use either their gas company exclusively or a gas station that stands alone for the single purpose of selling gas. Consumers could see a pricing break at the gas pump or retail counter when the latest shot at at financial reform goes into effect.

However, critics of the reform -- mostly banking officials and lobbyists -- query how much of the savings retailers will pass along.

Even John Medlin, former chairman and chief executive of Wachovia Corp., made a rare Mr comment Friday to argue that the changes "will reduce the availability of credit and raise the cost of loans and other banking services."

"It will do very cheap to improve the safety and soundness of the financial sector," he said.

Congress approved regulations Friday that could be importance billions in lower interchange, or swipe, fees for merchants and retailers. Those are the fees that are collected when customers use debit or credit cards when making purchases.

The legislation would own the Federal Reserve to limit how much banks can charge in interchange fees to what is "reasonable and proportional" to their costs for processing debit transactions. The interchange fees for credit cards would not be touched.
