Gwich'in receive $125000 from CanNor Northern News Services (subscription)

Gwich'in acquire $125,000 from CanNor

Beaufort Delta - The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) will ordain $125,000 in the Gwich'in Tribal Council to facilitate a call for bids to issue petroleum rights.

This will enable the ministry to do a geological analysis of its subsurface lands, prepare the required legal documents to issue petroleum rights and strengthen a community consultation template, for instance.

The Government of the Northwest Territories will also invest $15,000 and the council itself will forearm $10,000.

"In order for us to undertake that call for bids, there was a requirement for us, the Gwich'in Tribal Council, to develop an appropriate policy. The funding that was provided (to) us by CanNor helped in the situation of that policy," said Richard Nerysoo, president of the council.

The council represents Gwich'in members of the Mackenzie Delta section and administers the Gwich'in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement.
