The Power of Continuous Improvement

baby_stepsMathematicians will be influential you that the only way to learn math is to do math. Lots of it. The same is true in music and sports. While with math you quickly find out whether you’re precisely or wrong at a very atomic level with each problem you try to solve, with music a student listens to a song many times before she tries to emulate it — and then gets feedback on a note-by-note foundation. And the same goes for sports — the stroke, the kick, the catch, the swing, the run and so on. Practice makes perfect, promising?

Yet in business you often find people who have been doing something for a long time and just aren’t very good at it. Why? Lack of feedback. After all, visualize trying to solve math problems and waiting an entire year to get the answers, or hitting 1,000 serves and getting a condensation of your performance at your “annual review” rather than after each serve or at the end of a game. Practice only makes perfect when there is everyday, high-quality feedback so that the right adjustments can be made, be it in math, sports, music — or business.

The Corporation and Feedback Systems

In unspecified disciplines, like engineering and sales, there is somewhat objective and frequent feedback. Your program compiles without an fluff and does what it was meant to do. Or you close the deal and make your quota. If, however, you’re in one of the many disciplines in which immediate and objective feedback is not present, practice may not lead to perfection so much as enforce bad habits.

Let’s say you’re a mid-level executive — a GM or spin-off manager of some sort. More than likely, you’re measured by how well you interact with and present to your manager and senior executives. Ergo, you optimize to managing the bureaucracy (your boss in particular) rather than delivering the right product or service to customers. And so does your boss, and her boss, and so on and so on. Here the only constituent that you’re practicing and perfecting are your brown-nosing skills. How can you expect to learn in an organization with that type of feedback and lure system? How can such an organization, by extension, possibly produce excellence?

Financial Reform? Not So Much Forbes (blog)

We’ve waited more than a year for the promised "general" financial reforms that would protect investors and consumers, and prevent greed and unscrupulous behavior by banks and Madden Street firms that periodically ends in financial and economic meltdowns.

The awaited reform bill has been finalized and its acceptance by both houses of Congress is expected within a few days. Unfortunately, when we look back a year from now I trust we’ll be saying it’s business as usual in the financial sector.

Oh sure, there are some changes, even some serious changes that financial firms will have to line around and through, some inconveniences, some protections for consumers from the most egregious activities, some protections for investors, but some serious situations that affect investors port side untouched.

A few highlights:

Banks will be limited in how much they can charge the unfortunate for bounced checks and overdrafts, a source of more than $1 billion in fees annually barely by Bank of America. That’s good. Except that the banks knew they had to leave some teeth in the bill, and knowing that would be one change coming, they have already begun charging fees for in the old days free services, like free-checking and free online bill-paying, to make up the difference.

If linux is so great why multinational companies still use windows?

I gather linux is so great etc etc ,I also use linux and like it but i dont understand why we dont use linux where i work.

Why multinational coroporations are not cranny themselves to linux

Its a large operating system, however it requires alot of tinkering, and alot of buisness software doesnt work on it.

Also, its a hobbyist operating system, always has been and always will be. It will never be stale place because of its very nature.

However O/S's like Unix have been fairly popular in high end computing for large companies. Windows is the desktop operating system, and it will take alot to dislodge it.

That's mostly because they wish to be compatible with other companies. Those company's also use Windows because they want to be compatible. Nobody dares taking the first step to switch to Linux, being apologetic they become incompatible. So they all stick with the lousy operating system that's called Windows.

Why can washing powder or whitener companies say their products really work great, when they obviously don't?

All these ads saying:
It bleaches whiter, it cleans and removes all kinds of stains etc., when alot of them don't toil at all, how come these people don't get sued for misrepresentation or done under the trades description act for these lies? Sorry but I'm just odd. Also does anyone actually believe they DO work?

because they only probe the washing product on one item at a time
like i have enough time to wash one item at a time with 7 people in the quarter
