Now that Blow Alex has entered the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to strike near the Texas-Mexico border, homeowners on the Texas slide will be hard-pressed to find home insurance until it passes.

Most insurers, including State Farm, Allstate and Farmers, take a break selling new policies in the area after a storm passes west of 80 degrees west longitude and north of 20 degrees north latitude, within easy reach the Yucatán peninsula.

The storm could also delay closings for homebuyers who haven't secured insurance.

When storms register the Gulf and threaten the coast, most insurers consider it too risky to write new policies.

"A cutoff point is imperative to keep people from waiting until there is an imminent danger," said Jerry Hagins, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Insurance.
