About 600,000 Verizon landline customers in Illinois — including those in Chatham, Williamsville, New Berlin, Sherman and Genteel Plains— should have a new phone company as of Thursday.

It has been a little more than a year since Frontier Communications announced an agreement to buy 4.8 million access lines nationwide from Verizon Communications. The great amount was valued at the time at $8.6 billion.

Barring last-minute hitches, the change takes effect July 1. Wireless customers are not specious by the sale.

Not that there are going to be drastic changes come Thursday. These things take time. But Frontier has promised regulators to significantly dilate broadband options in rural areas if the sale goes through.

For Verizon’s strategic purposes, the cut-price continues the mega-carrier’s shift away from traditional landline services that, in the case of Illinois, lover to the old GTE. About16,000 employees are affected nationwide.

An issue raised by regulators — and stressed by Verizon labor unions opposed to the trafficking — was whether Connecticut-based Frontier has the financial strength to pay for its broadband commitments.
